Apple's Safari 26 to Revolutionize Online Identity Verification
Apple has taken a significant step towards streamlining online identity verification. Safari 26, due in October 2025, will fully support the W3C's Digital Credentials API, enabling websites to securely request mobile identity documents (mdocs) from Apple Wallet and other registered iOS apps.
Previously, online identity verification often required users to photograph physical IDs and submit selfies. The new API addresses these issues by allowing users to present secure electronic versions of government-issued credentials, known as mdocs, directly from their smartphones.
The API, adhering to ISO/IEC 18013-5 and 18013-7 standards, ensures user-friendly and secure identity verification across macOS, iOS, and iPadOS devices. It employs session encryption to protect personally identifiable information and device binding to prevent ID cloning and replay attacks. Additionally, it promotes data minimization, allowing requesting parties to obtain only necessary information for specific transactions. Cryptographic signatures ensure identity data integrity and prevent forgery, reducing identity theft risks.
With Safari 26, Apple is set to enhance online identity verification, making it more secure and convenient for users. Websites can now request mobile IDs directly from digital wallets, reducing the need for users to handle physical documents and submit selfies. This move aligns with Apple's commitment to user privacy and security.
