Art Student's Journey: Trine Wade's Interdisciplinary Approach

At OCAD University (OCA), Trine Wade is making a name for herself with her unique interdisciplinary approach to art. The Creative Arts degree at OCA offers a curriculum that integrates creative practice with a diverse range of topics, from arts and culture to science and technology.

Wade encourages fellow students to make the most of their coursework and assignments, reflecting on their choices and documenting them. Her satisfaction with her projects comes from the emotional connection she feels, knowing she is doing it for herself, the way she wants to.

However, Wade faces a challenge in learning techniques without people around to bounce ideas off. To overcome this, she emphasizes the importance of participating in online student community group sessions for support and encouragement. The OCA community, she finds, is invaluable.

Wade's interdisciplinary method of working developed as she grew in confidence throughout stage 2 of her degree. Time has been a significant factor in her development of confidence across a range of creative methods and disciplines. The supportive tutors at OCA have encouraged her to 'push the boundaries', enabling her to experiment with photography, printmaking, collage, sculpture, text, installation, and video.

In her most recent project, Wade symbolically brought her grandad home to a coastal town in Norway through site-specific art installations. This emotional project reached an audience beyond the OCA, demonstrating the power of interdisciplinary art.

Wade prefers to work with long-term projects that allow her ideas and intentions to develop over time. She chooses methods because she feels they will help her communicate and visualize her ideas, even if she is not proficient in them. Her practice involves an auto-ethnographic focus and a phenomenological methodology.

Looking ahead, Wade is applying for a practice-based PhD to continue her artistic and research development. She advises students to turn up to as many group sessions as possible to connect with other students, and to choose methods that best suit their vision and intentions.

In summary, OCA's Creative Arts degree provides an integrated curriculum and experiential learning within arts, sciences, and technology, encouraging students to develop interdisciplinary methods for innovative creative practices. Wade's journey at OCA is a testament to the power of this approach, and her work serves as an inspiration for future artists.
