Assessment of Two Novel School Roadways in Bergerhausen and Katernberg Primary Schools
In an effort to make school routes safer and encourage more children to walk, bike, or scooter to school, the Be-MoVe project - a real-world laboratory project for pedestrian and cycling traffic, funded through the "MobilityWorksCity 2025" funding program of the Federal Ministry of Research (BMFTR) - has initiated a series of measures.
One of these measures is the introduction of temporary school streets in Bergerhausen (Elbestraße at the Grundschule Am Krausen Baumchen) and Katernberg (Buchelsloh at the Kantschule). These school streets, part of the catalogue of measures from the 2023 school route checks, will be closed to car traffic on weekdays from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., initially for one year with an evaluation after six months.
The need for action at Kantschule was confirmed during on-site visits, and the establishment of a school street is being tested as a possible measure to address the critical traffic situation highlighted by the parents' association of Kantschule in October 2024.
Additionally, Siegstraße in Bergerhausen will become a one-way street as part of this trial to ensure safe traffic flow. Existing parent pick-up/drop-off points in Bergerhausen will continue to be used.
The school route checks are conducted by the planning office bueffee GbR from Wuppertal, and the idea for the school streets is inspired by a permanent school street in Bardelebenstraße in Holsterhausen, which was established after a successful trial phase in 2023.
The goal of the Be-MoVe project is to identify hazardous spots, develop solutions, and make school routes safer, promoting health, self-confidence, and academic performance of children and contributing to sustainability.
