Audacious Jump: A Bold Action Taken

In the wake of the ongoing Corona crisis, the city of Düsseldorf is taking bold steps to ensure the continuity of education for its 78,000 students. The city has announced a significant investment of 100 million euros in digital learning infrastructure over the coming years.

The investment will be directed towards WLAN, end devices, learning environment, broadband, visualization technology, and service and support. The aim is to replace traditional analog learning methods with digital learning, as outlined in the media development plan presented by Burkhard Hintzsche, Director of Education, in December 2019.

To facilitate this transition, the city has already put 8,500 tablets into use at state schools, and an additional 15,000 will be provided. These tablets will ensure that students have access to necessary teaching materials and the digital learning platform, which will provide communication and coordination during school closures due to the virus.

The teaching staff is prepared and willing to provide students with meaningful tasks digitally. Volker Syring, principal of the Humboldt Gymnasium Düsseldorf and spokesperson for the gymnasiums, has welcomed the city's decision to bring forward the partial realization of the digital learning platform.

The digital learning environment is a key component of the media development plan. Beyond replacing analog learning materials, it aims to provide a comprehensive, interactive, and engaging learning experience. The digital learning platform, accessible from personal devices, will go live next week, and webinars and tutorials will be provided to help users learn to use it quickly.

This digital learning platform can be a valuable support for students, especially in preparing for exams. Mayor Thomas Geisel announced the provision of this platform next week for home access by students. The first step towards a new learning environment must be taken at a quick pace rather than cautiously, as stated by Volker Syring.

Taking such measures is necessary when facing challenges like school closures due to the Corona virus. As Düsseldorf continues to invest in its digital learning infrastructure, it is setting an example for other cities to follow in ensuring the continuity of education during this unprecedented time.
