Authorities' school regulations under scrutiny following criticisms by the president-teacher

In a critical stance, Heinz-Peter Meidinger, President of the German Teachers' Association (DL), has voiced his concern over the absence of a nationwide mask mandate in schools following a recent federal-state conference.

Despite calls from the German Teachers' Association for stronger mask requirements to safeguard schoolchildren and staff, the states decided to maintain their individual policies, tailored to local infection rates and circumstances. This decentralized approach, which has been persistent throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, is a reflection of Germany's federal system, where school policies are primarily decided at the state level, not by a central national mandate.

Meidinger found it incomprehensible and irresponsible that a nationwide mask mandate was not included in the measures. He emphasized the importance of preventive action in schools to avoid drastic measures like school closures, comparing the current situation in Germany to the school closures in Austria due to a lack of preventive action.

The absence of a uniform national school mask mandate has led to a situation where around 200,000 students and 3,000 teachers are currently in quarantine nationwide. Meidinger warned that the lack of preventive action in schools today may lead to school closures similar to Austria.

Meidinger suggested that a mask mandate should be implemented for students in secondary schools and, in his view, also for primary school students. He believes that inaction in the school sector by state leaders may endanger the educational mission and could potentially lead to school closures.

Meidinger's comments imply a concern about the potential consequences of inaction in the school sector, such as school closures. His perspective suggests a belief that the educational mission is at risk due to inaction in the school sector. Despite the federal-state conference not agreeing upon any additional measures to contain coronavirus in schools, Meidinger's call for immediate action to prevent school closures in Germany remains a significant voice in the ongoing discourse.
