Award Recognizing Outstanding Volunteer Work at Llangorse Sailing Club
Fresh Take:
Llanfor Sailing Club raves about their shining star, Lorina Walden, who has been honored with an RYA Cymru Wales Impact Award. This badass lady from the bordering town of Kington is a dinghy sailing instructor and the Training Principal of the club for the past six years.
Lorina's volunteer work has been instrumental in boosting the club's membership, drawing in people of all ages to develop a love for sailing.
The club is an RYA Recognized Training Center, hosting learn-to-sail courses, and Lorina took it up a notch by introducing Development Days to help novice members hone their skills and conquer their fears. These sessions have proven popular, with over 20 regulars by the season's end.
Lorina aims to bridge the gap between beginners and the club’s experienced racers. She wants to make the club a welcoming community that nurtures new members and provides a supportive environment for them to thrive.
Llanfor SC is a non-profit club nestled in the Brecon Beacons National Park, offering dinghy sailing, racing, and training at Wales' second-largest inland water. Lorina joined the club back in 1997, seeking a watersport her family could enjoy together.
She's grateful and surprised to receive the Impact Award, attributing it to the hard work and dedication of the other club members. Lorina obtains genuine satisfaction from helping others learn to sail and watching them conquer their apprehensions.
Lorina was nominated for the award by sailing instructor Paul Gomm, who highlighted her contributions in making the club sustainable and growing its membership. Taff Owens, the founder of Pembrokeshire Powerboating & Sailing Academy, is another shining example of an individual who has been recognized for their significant contributions to sailing sports in Wales [2].
Lorina has recently handed over her Training Principal role to spend more time with her grandkids but plans to continue supporting the club as a volunteer instructor and Trustee. The club welcomes anyone who wants to try sailing at its open day on Saturday, 10th May 2025! For more information, email [email protected] or visit the club's website to learn more about its activities.
