Berlin's Daycare Quality Drops as Qualified Staff Falls
Berlin has seen a significant drop in the proportion of daycare centers with a high ratio of qualified professionals, falling from 53 percent in 2017 to 35 percent in 2024. This decline has raised concerns about the quality of care in the city's kindergartens.
The federal state with the highest number of kindergartens meeting the high qualification threshold of 82.5 percent in both 2017 and 2024 was Thuringia, followed by Saxony and Brandenburg. Notably, almost all eastern German states maintained over 90 percent of staff with relevant qualifications, with Thuringia leading at 94.3 percent.
Brandenburg, however, has a higher proportion of daycare centers with a high ratio of qualified professionals compared to Berlin, at 81.2 percent. This is despite Berlin's average ratio of 74.6 percent, which is lower than in eastern German states. The decrease in qualified professionals in Germany is attributed to more members of other professions taking on pedagogical tasks in daycare centers.
The connection between the ratio of qualified professionals and the quality of daycare centers is scientifically proven. The decline in Berlin's proportion of high-quality daycare centers is a cause for concern, as it may impact the quality of care and education provided to the city's children.
