Birmingham Promise Wins Luminary Award and $1 Million Investment
In a significant recognition of their work, Birmingham Promise has been awarded the 1954 Project Luminary Award by The CAFE Group. This prestigious honour is given to leaders at organisations working to transform educational outcomes in Black communities across the United States.
As part of the award, Birmingham Promise will receive $1 million in unrestricted funding to support their scholarship and internship programs for students at Birmingham City Schools. Tiffany Thompson, Chief Impact Officer of The CAFE Group, praised the winners, stating they represent innovation happening across the education ecosystem.
Samantha Williams, Executive Director of Birmingham Promise, expressed her excitement for the partnership and the opportunities it will provide for their organisation. She also expressed her gratitude for the significant investment that will help Birmingham Promise increase the number of college graduates from Birmingham City Schools.
Birmingham Promise has been making a difference in the lives of students for several years. They cover up to four years of tuition in public Alabama colleges and universities for all Birmingham City Schools graduates. To date, they have provided over $15 million in tuition assistance to more than 1,600 graduates of Birmingham City Schools.
In addition to tuition assistance, Birmingham Promise has offered internships to over 350 Birmingham City Schools seniors. Danny McKinney, Chairman of the Birmingham Promise board of directors, expressed pride and gratitude for the award, noting the impact it will have on the future of the city's students.
The Luminary Award is The CAFE Group's flagship initiative dedicated to fulfilling the promise of equitable education in the United States. The CAFE Group is a daily political news site devoted to Alabama politics, providing accurate and reliable coverage of policy, elections, and government.
