ChatGPT's usage guidelines for teenagers tightened by OpenAI
In a move to ensure a safer environment for its users, particularly young ones, OpenAI has announced new measures for its popular AI model, ChatGPT. The changes come in the wake of recent controversies and investigations into the potential harm that AI chatbots can cause.
OpenAI has decided to err on the side of caution, implementing stricter safeguards for unclear cases. This means that underage users will no longer be able to engage in flirtatious or suggestive conversations with ChatGPT, as the system will now direct them to a safer version of the service.
The new rules also focus on sexual conversations and self-harm. Tighter restrictions will be applied around these topics, and in very serious cases, ChatGPT may even reach out to local authorities. If a minor uses ChatGPT to imagine harmful scenarios, the system may also alert their parents.
Parents will soon have more control over how their teens use ChatGPT. They will be able to set 'blackout hours' that block access to the service at specific times. Moreover, linking teen accounts to parents' accounts ensures correct flagging of underage users. OpenAI is urging parents to link teen accounts to their own for age verification.
These changes follow a wrongful death case filed by the parents of Adam Raine, a teenager who died by suicide after long interactions with ChatGPT. The hearing, scheduled by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) in August, will review findings from a Reuters investigation that uncovered policy documents suggesting that another tech company, Meta, had allowed sexual conversations with minors through its chatbot.
The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on 'Examining the Harm of AI Chatbots' on the same day. Adam Raine's father will be speaking at the hearing, along with other experts and concerned parents. The hearing will also review the actions taken by OpenAI and Meta in response to the controversies.
After the report came to light, Meta tightened its rules regarding such conversations. Character.AI faces a similar lawsuit, adding to the pressure on AI companies to ensure the safety of their platforms, particularly for young users.
OpenAI's new measures are part of a broader effort to create a safer and more responsible AI ecosystem. By taking these steps, OpenAI hopes to regain the trust of its users and maintain its position as a leader in the field of AI.
