Controversy surrounds Fresno Unified's plan to settle the contract of their Communications Chief
In the heart of California, Fresno Unified School District is grappling with a significant issue: the misuse of an artificial intelligence tool. The controversy, first reported by Action News in May, centred around Nikki Henry, the district's former chief of communications, who was tasked with creating a document highlighting instances of alleged union leadership targeting Superintendent Misty Her.
However, the document, titled *Instances of Fresno Teachers Association (FTA) Leadership Targeting Superintendent Misty Her*, was not what it seemed. It contained 39 fabricated quotes, generated by AI, that were presented as authentic comments from the union leadership. The revelation of this deception, which came to light when it was discovered that the quotes were not real, led to Henry's resignation from the district after six years of service.
In a bid to avoid litigation, Henry agreed to a resignation settlement. The terms of the agreement include a lump sum payment of $162,000, continued health and welfare benefits through July 31, 2025, and a clause preventing Henry from seeking future employment with Fresno Unified. The settlement document also mentions the "uncertainty, inconvenience and expense of litigation."
The settlement has not been without controversy. The Fresno Teachers Association has criticised the agreement, arguing that it denies accountability and rewards alleged misconduct. The Fresno Unified Board of Trustees is expected to vote on approving the settlement in their upcoming meeting.
The AI controversy remains a significant issue for Fresno Unified. The details of its connection to Henry's resignation have not been fully clarified. No comment has been received from Fresno Unified regarding the agreement.
