Cornerstone Laying Ceremony for the New Altenessen-Süd Secondary School Building

In the heart of Altenessen-Süd, Essen, a new school is rising – a six-story, state-of-the-art structure designed as an all-day learning and living space. The comprehensive school, scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, will span over 34,000 square meters, equivalent to five football fields.

The architectural firm Carpus + Partner Architekten is responsible for this innovative project, which focuses on barrier-free access, inclusion, and digitization. The school will accommodate around 1,300 students and 110 teachers and staff, offering classrooms, specialized rooms, administrative areas, a cafeteria, an auditorium, a library, and recreational spaces.

Sustainability is at the forefront of this new school. The construction will feature sustainable wood-hybrid structures and the planting of around 65 climate-appropriate trees. The energy supply will be 100 percent renewable, and for the first time in a municipal building of this size, geothermal energy will be used. This forward-thinking approach is expected to reduce the school's CO2 emissions for heating by 98.6 percent compared to existing schools in Essen.

The new school will also serve as a public space for students and residents of the neighbourhood, with the school park being integrated into a modern neighbourhood centre. The school park will be connected to public transportation and have sufficient bicycle parking facilities, making it easily accessible for all.

Mayor Thomas Kufen, Muchtar Al Ghusain, Simone Raskob, and Martin Harter were present at the groundbreaking ceremony on 26.08.2025. The total estimated cost for the construction of the new school is around 137 million euros.

This new school is a significant step forward in Essen's commitment to a greener, more inclusive future. For more information about school construction in Essen, please visit the city portal.
