Des Moines Superintendent Detained by ICE: Students Protest

Ian Roberts, the superintendent of Des Moines public schools, has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Roberts, a native of Guyana and former Olympic runner, was living and working in the U.S. illegally, according to ICE. His arrest has sparked protests among hundreds of high school students, who oppose both his detention and ICE's immigration policies.

Roberts, who submitted his resignation from the superintendent position on Tuesday, is currently being held at the Woodbury County Jail in Sioux City, Iowa. His potential deportation looms, with his appeals' outcomes uncertain. The Des Moines school board has accepted his resignation.

Federal authorities are investigating how Roberts obtained a handgun found in his district vehicle. The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division is separately investigating the district for potential racial discrimination in hiring.

Roberts' immigration status and the circumstances surrounding his arrest remain under scrutiny. His future in the U.S. hangs in the balance as legal proceedings continue. The impact of his detention and resignation on the Des Moines school district and its students is yet to be fully understood.
