District of Recklinghausen/Bottrop - "Sports Connect": Police, schools, and school administration report positive outcomes

The Recklinghausen police headquarters recently conducted an innovative prevention format called "Sport connects" at Martin-Luther-Europaschule in Herten on September 16, 2025. This modern form of police work, which combines sports pedagogical elements and prevention, is aimed at strengthening social cohesion in schools.

Communication, dexterity, and cooperation were the main focuses of the project. The format involved a sports-interactive scenario where students worked together with the police to solve a fictional criminal case. The progression in the investigation was contingent on the mastery of coordinative and sporting tasks.

School principal Christoph Schenk praised the students' motivation and team spirit during the event. He emphasized that the format allowed for authentic encounters and deepened the understanding between school and police in a sustainable way. Schenk was joined by Brigitte Rode, from the school administration of Herten, who supports the use of innovative prevention formats like "Sport connects".

Recklinghausen's police president, Friederike Zurhausen, stated that the goal of the action was to promote trust among young people in the state and its police. Zurhausen mentioned that the encounters during the event were equal, free from prejudices or hierarchies, and aimed to break down possible prejudices and fears, and sensitize young people to societal values such as mutual respect, teamwork, tolerance, and empathy.

Both students and police officers had a positive experience with the "Sport connects" format. The project has been carried out for the fourth time, with schools such as Wolfgang-Borchert-Gesamtschule, Bernard-Overberg-Schule in Recklinghausen, and Rosa-Parks-Schule in Herten hosting it.

The Recklinghausen police headquarters aims to continue the "Sport connects" action in the future and integrate it permanently into their catalog of criminal preventive measures.
