Empire Discovery Institute Launches Rolling Proposals, Expands Drug Discovery Efforts
Empire Discovery Institute (EDI) has announced significant developments in its mission to accelerate drug discovery and development. Starting in May, EDI will accept proposal submissions on a rolling basis, marking a new phase for the non-profit organisation. EDI, supported by $35.4 million from Empire State Development, works with renowned research labs and has established a robust partnership with Deerfield Management Company.
EDI's Medicines Discovery Award Program, which funded $4.5 million for its inaugural cohort in 2020, will open applications in the summer of 2021. This program supports projects in high-need therapeutic areas and hard-to-treat diseases, accelerating them towards clinical validation. Last year's awardees included projects focused on wound healing and nonsense mutations.
EDI's CEO, Martin Graham PhD, brings over 30 years of experience in drug development. He has assembled a Scientific Advisory Board with extensive pharmaceutical expertise to guide EDI's initiatives. The organisation collaborates with research labs at the University of Rochester, the University at Buffalo, and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. Despite extensive searches, information about EDI's Chief Business Officer remains unavailable.
EDI's partnership with Deerfield Management Company has resulted in the launch of Empire-Deerfield Discovery & Development (ED). This collaboration will see Deerfield invest up to $65 million over five years, further bolstering EDI's capabilities in accelerating new therapies. With rolling proposal submissions starting in May and the Medicines Discovery Award Program opening in the summer, EDI continues to expand its impact on the drug discovery landscape.
