Essen Bolsters School Safety with 406,000 Euro Plan

Essen's city council has approved the 'School as a safe place' concept, aiming to bolster security in the city's educational institutions. The first measures, including violence prevention programs and enhanced door locks, were recommended on 10.09.2025. The project, costing around 406,000 euros, will be evaluated annually for further development.

The initiative comprises structural-technical and preventive-educational aspects. During the pilot phase, 14 schools will receive doors equipped with quick-locking knobs, and 21 schools will introduce proven violence prevention programs, with approximately 20 teachers per school receiving training. The main entrances of the 14 schools will also sport new signs displaying accurate addresses for better emergency service orientation.

Further measures, such as alarm systems or visual protection elements, are being explored for potential implementation. Additionally, the theater-pedagogical program 'My body belongs to me' will be permanently funded for all third-grade classes in Essen's primary and special schools.

The 'School as a safe place' concept, approved by Essen's city council in July, is set to enhance safety at the dadeschools through a combination of structural and educational measures. With an initial investment of approximately 406,000 euros, the project's effectiveness will be assessed annually to ensure continuous improvement.
