Experiment on the Density of Liquids: Scientific Layering Process
Join Erica from What Do We Do All Day? every Thursday this summer for a free and exciting Summer Science Camp, where you and your kids can explore the wonders of science! This week, we delve into the Liquid Layers Density Experiment, a captivating activity that will have your kids "seeing" density in action.
The Liquid Layers Density Experiment involves a few simple household items: 100% pure maple syrup or corn syrup, dish soap, water, oil (either olive or vegetable), rubbing alcohol, food coloring, a turkey baster, pipette, or medicine dropper, and a clear jar.
To properly perform this experiment and prevent the layers from mixing, follow these important pouring directions:
1. Pour the liquids slowly and carefully down the side of the container or along a stirring rod to minimize disturbance between the layers. This prevents turbulence which can mix the liquids.
2. Begin with the most dense liquid at the bottom, and add liquids in order of decreasing density, layering one gently on top of the other.
3. Avoid shaking or stirring after pouring as this creates emulsions or mixing of layers.
4. For liquids that have visibly separated, allow time for the layers to settle and remain undisturbed to keep the stratification clear.
5. When pouring from one container to another, open the stopcock slowly and carefully to drain the bottom layer without disturbing the upper layer.
By following these steps, you can create stunning, colourful liquid layers that demonstrate the principle of density.
The Liquid Layers Density Experiment is just one of the many science experiments available on the Super Cool Science Experiments for Kids page. Don't let the fun and discovery stop there! Each Thursday, new science experiments are shared as part of the Summer Science Camp, ensuring a steady stream of excitement and learning for your kids.
