New Report Highlights Priorities for Creative Industries Policy and Research

A new report, titled "State of Creativity," has been released, offering insights into the future of the creative sector and suggesting priority areas for policymakers. The report was authored by Hasan Bakhshi, Director of the Creative PEC, and was launched at a conference attended by policymakers, researchers, and industry professionals on April 27, 2023.

The report reflects on creative industry policy over the past 10 years and discusses the future of the sector. Some key findings include the need to end unequal access to the arts and the regenerative power of the creative sector for the UK.

The report marks a £11 million investment from the AHRC for a further five years of the Creative PEC. The Creative PEC will move to a new North/South twin-hub model in June 2023, led by Newcastle University, with the RSA.

The priority areas for creative industry policymakers over the coming years include focusing on creative education in schools and universities. The report also touches on the migrant and skills needs of creative businesses in the UK, but does not discuss specific findings related to international trade, immigration, or accessing foreign talent in the Creative Industries.

The report includes contributions from 24 creative industry thinkers from seven UK universities and across the creative sector. It is now available for download, with a size of 9.781 MB.

Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, the 2023-2024 Creative Sector Agenda embodies the core policy directions from the "State of Creativity" report. The priority areas for creative industry policies in Massachusetts focus on strengthening the creative economy and workforce, and protecting and expanding cultural and creative spaces.

These priorities come from a statewide engagement process with artists, creatives, cultural organizations, and other stakeholders, aiming to make the sector more equitable, just, and visible through targeted policy changes. Significant legislative efforts include bills related to cultural districts, the Downtown Vitality Act, live theater tax credits, and funding for cultural facilities.

In 2015, worldwide exports of creative goods exceeded 500 billion USD, with a 150% increase since 2000. However, the UK's departure from the EU has affected the way British firms trade and work with European counterparts.
