GCU Theatre Students Aid EMTs in Final Exam, Enhance Own Skills

Grand Canyon University (GCU) theatre students recently stepped out of the spotlight and into the role of standardized patients, aiding Mesa Community College Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) students in their final exam. The GCU actors, led by senior Cora Epton, brought minimalist scenic design and dramatic scenarios to life, pushing their own boundaries and preparing for upcoming productions like Thornton Wilder's 'Our Town'.

In the unique collaboration, GCU theatre students, including Cora Epton who played the stage manager in 'Our Town', transformed into realistic patients with a variety of pretend injuries and illnesses. They underwent makeup and prosthetics to portray conditions such as burns, shotgun wounds, schizophrenia, and gastrointestinal bleeds. The high-intensity scenarios were designed to challenge and test the EMT students' medical knowledge and skills.

Epton, who narrated the show and interacted with characters and the audience in 'Our Town', led her fellow GCU actors in providing feedback to the EMT students after the simulations. This experience not only helped the EMT students but also pushed the GCU actors outside of their comfort zones, enhancing their own skills and preparation for upcoming productions.

The GCU theatre students' involvement in the EMT students' final exam was a valuable learning experience for both parties. By stepping into the roles of standardized patients, the GCU actors honed their craft and prepared for their own upcoming productions, such as 'Our Town'. Meanwhile, the EMT students benefited from the realistic, dramatic scenarios provided by the GCU students, ensuring they were well-prepared for their future medical careers.
