Gender Roles Workshop in Lünen: Challenging Toxic Masculinity

A workshop exploring gender roles and power structures took place at the Bürgerzentrum Gahmen in Lünen, Ruhrgebiet, on September 26, 2025. Led by Mathias Gathof (Spiegelbild Wiesbaden) and Jana Müller (men.return), 16 participants delved into the topic of achieving greater equality.

The workshop, titled 'Toxic Masculinity', was part of a series of initiatives organised by local groups such as the Bürgerzentrum Gahmen, youth centres, or community organisations. It aimed to confront societal norms and encourage participants to examine their own gender roles. Practical exercises highlighted how these norms influence coexistence. Participants agreed that openness, self-reflection, and showing care were key steps towards change. Women shared strategies against sexual harassment, while men's strategies were not discussed in detail. The workshop emphasised the need for men to take an active role in challenging entrenched gender patterns. Regina Hunschock, director of the Bürgerzentrum Gahmen, announced plans to continue these discussions through new offers.
