Ghana Initiates Educator Development in Savannah Region to Broaden Girls' Participation in Information and Communication Technology Field

The National Girls-in-ICT Programme, an initiative by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, has commenced in Damongo, Savannah Region. The programme, designed to foster early interest in information and communication technology among girls, aims to benefit 1,000 girls initially, with an expected expansion to an additional 1,000.

The programme is currently conducting a Training of Trainers (ToT) session, which is being held at Damongo Senior High School. One hundred teachers are participating in the five-day workshop, learning practical digital skills and developing their expertise in Scratch, a visual programming language.

The teachers will pass on the skills they learn to schoolgirls across the region, as part of the programme's aim to build a sustainable knowledge-transfer model for digital literacy. The ToT session focuses on providing practical skills to create interactive stories, animations, and games.

The National Girls-in-ICT Programme is a significant step towards Ghana's broader digital inclusion agenda. By equipping girls with practical digital skills, the programme supports the country's efforts to bridge the digital divide and ensure equal opportunities for all.

The Training of Trainers session is not ongoing at the moment, but it is expected to have a lasting impact on the digital literacy landscape in the Savannah Region. The programme's focus on Scratch and interactive content is a new development in the context of the National Girls-in-ICT Programme, and it is expected to generate enthusiasm and engagement among the participating girls.

The National Girls-in-ICT Programme does not repeat its earlier aims or focus, but it continues to be a pioneering initiative in fostering digital literacy among girls in Ghana.
