Haiti in Crisis: Gang Violence, Disasters, and Political Unrest Wreak Havoc
Haiti faces a grim situation as gang violence, natural disasters, and political unrest continue to plague the nation. In the past few weeks, multiple attacks and severe weather events have claimed lives, destroyed homes, and disrupted daily life. Here's a rundown of recent events.
The violence began with a drone strike by the Haitian National Police in Cité Soleil on 20 September, resulting in the tragic deaths of 11 people, eight of whom were children. In the following days, gang attacks escalated. The Kokorat San Ras gang targeted L'Estère on 22 September, leaving one dead and many injured, with homes destroyed. The Ti Bwadòm gang attacked Bassin-Bleu on 18 September, causing at least one death and ten kidnappings, along with extensive property damage. Montrouis also fell victim to unrest when armed men set fire to the local police station on 17 September, blocking a major highway due to barricades.
Natural disasters added to the chaos. Severe rains between 25 and 28 September led to flooding in Cayes, resulting in one death, one disappearance, and 5,000 flooded homes, along with significant agricultural losses. Protests erupted in Gonaïves on 29 September after the killing of Wilford Ferdinand, with supporters blocking roads and demanding justice. Reports of an attack in Liancourt on the night of 30 September to 1 October further highlight the ongoing violence.
As the 2025 hurricane season approaches, fears grow of more destruction due to inadequate preparations. Despite warnings and available funding, local authorities have yet to implement preventive measures, leaving many cities vulnerable. International support for gang control efforts in Haiti remains unclear, with no specific countries identified as providing assistance. The situation in Haiti continues to be dire, with urgent action needed to address both the immediate violence and long-term challenges posed by natural disasters.
