In the bustling journalism world of Phoenix, Arizona, several reporters are making waves with their investigative work and compelling stories.

Catherine Reagor, a real estate reporter at the Arizona Republic, recently made headlines with her discovery of Michael Phelps's move to the Phoenix area. By delving into public records of home sales in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, Reagor confirmed Phelps's new residence in Arizona, a story that garnered approximately three million views.

Meanwhile, Diana Henriques, a contributing writer and former finance reporter at the New York Times, continues to impress with her extensive work. Henriques is best known for her book, "The Wizard of Lies," about the disgraced former stockbroker Bernie Madoff. The book led to an HBO movie adaptation, and Henriques even played herself in the film.

Henriques's quick thinking and persistence paid off when she seized upon the story of Madoff's arrest before many of her peers fully grasped what was going on. Her tenacity led her to land the first interview with Madoff after his arrest, a testament to her relationships within the white-collar defense bar.

Andy Blye, a technology and finance reporter at the Phoenix Business Journal, is another rising star in the Phoenix journalism scene. Blye, who received his M.A. in investigative journalism from the Cronkite school in 2020, is currently covering the construction of a new semiconductor plant in northern Phoenix. This plant, under construction for the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, will be the first U.S.-located plant for the company.

Blye's investigation didn't stop there. By examining Phoenix zoning records and talking to nearby small businesses, Blye uncovered the impact of the semiconductor plant on local hot air balloon companies.

Susan Lisovicz, a Cronkite Reynolds Foundation visiting professor, is also making a significant impact in the journalism world. Lisovicz is currently working on a long-term project with Catherine Reagor, examining the lingering effects of redlining in housing insecurity trends and eviction practices within the Phoenix metro area.

In all these cases, the journalists' success can be attributed to their endless curiosity and their ability to glean stories out of records to uncover new angles. Henriques stresses the importance of journalists broadening and diversifying their base of sources to ensure a comprehensive and accurate understanding of the stories they are reporting. This approach is evident in the work of these journalists, who are making a significant impact in the Phoenix news scene.
