Individuals Should Act if Drivers Display Risky Behavior - National Safety Awareness for Passengers Week
The German Road Safety Council (DVR) is set to initiate the second annual National Passenger Safety Week, scheduled from January 21-28, 2024. This campaign aims to educate passengers about the critical role they play in road safety and encourage them to speak up against dangerous driving behaviours.
The campaign, initially launched by We Save Lives and The National Road Safety Foundation in 2022, will involve a nationwide media blitz, social media outreach, and participation from various groups such as the Governors Highway Safety Association, the National Safety Council, SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), and FCCLA.
At the heart of the campaign is the "Courage to Intervene" promise, which people are being encouraged to sign. This promise encourages passengers to take a stand against dangerous driving practices, such as impairment, speeding, aggressive driving, or drowsiness, which put everyone at risk of serious injury or death.
To support passengers in their efforts, materials about how to speak out, scripts, and videos giving examples of when and how to SPEAK UP will be distributed. We Save Lives, an umbrella organisation of over 50 highway safety advocates, law enforcement agencies, companies, and other groups, will play a significant role in this distribution.
The National Road Safety Foundation, another key player in the campaign, produces free videos and teaching materials on various traffic safety issues, including distracted driving, speed and aggression, impaired driving, drowsy driving, driver proficiency, and pedestrian safety.
In 2020, passengers accounted for 24 percent of passenger vehicle fatalities nationwide. Candace Lightner, the founder of We Save Lives and the original founder of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), emphasises the importance of this campaign, stating that many lives might have been saved if passengers had spoken up when the driver was driving unsafely.
The National Passenger Safety Week campaign also engages teens in promoting safe driving to their peers and in their communities. The National Road Safety Foundation sponsors contests to encourage this involvement, partnering with youth advocacy groups like SADD and FCCLA.
More than 60 traffic safety and advocacy groups nationwide will participate in the campaign. The National Road Safety Foundation also partners with major auto shows in Chicago and Detroit. For more information and to sign the Courage to Intervene promise, visit nationalpassengersafety.org.
By speaking up and taking a stand against dangerous driving, passengers can make a significant difference in reducing road accidents and saving lives. Join the National Passenger Safety Week campaign and make a promise to intervene. Your voice could be the difference between life and death.
