Klaus Armbruster: A Renowned Artist's Return to Painting
Klaus Armbruster, born in Tübingen in 1942, embarked on an extraordinary artistic journey that spanned over six decades. After studying painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart from 1963 to 1967, Armbruster made a name for himself in the art world, winning the Youth Prize for Painting in 1968. However, in 1970, he gave up painting, choosing instead to engage politically through film.
From 1972 to 1980, Armbruster worked as an author, director, and editor at NDR television in Hamburg. His multimedia work expanded into stage art and contemporary music, and he made significant contributions to the world of film and media art.
In 1983, Armbruster was appointed professor for film and audiovisual media at the Folkwang University of the Arts. It was here that he founded the Folkwang Institute for Media Design in 1994. His dedication to his craft earned him recognition, with his oeuvre being a testament to the power of painting.
Despite the supposed demise of painting as an innovative artistic discipline, Armbruster's graphic and painterly works continued to live and renew themselves. After his emeritus, he took up painting again, this time with a different approach. His return to painting in 2006 introduced a sense of deceleration and his current work is figurative and meticulously detailed.
The comprehensive exhibition presents Armbruster's graphic and painterly works from the 1960s and his works created since 2006. A video cabinet showcases references to his films and media art productions from 1970 to 2005. Armbruster has also prepared a book publication for the exhibition.
While the reasons behind Armbruster's return to painting after a long hiatus are not explicitly documented, his continued commitment to art serves as a testament to the enduring power of creativity. His work offers a unique perspective on the evolution of art and the resilience of painting as a medium.
Klaus Armbruster, having dedicated decades to film and media art, rediscovered his passion for painting, integrating education-and-self-development by enrolling in a lifestyle of focused artistic creation upon his return to painting in 2006. The resurgence in Armbruster's lifestyle, driven by a renewed interest in painting, led him to create figurative and meticulously detailed works that showcase his growth and development as an artist.
