Learners Engaged in Community-Based Learning Function as Guiding Figures and Tutors in Local Educational Institutions
In the heart of the academic year, Holy Cross College students are delving deeper into their studies, not just in the classroom, but also in the community.
The Community Based Learning (CBL) programme, a significant student organisation on campus, is encouraging students to reflect on their service work and its potential impact on the communities they serve. With 39 sections of 28 courses incorporating a CBL component, many students are finding this experiential learning approach both enjoyable and impactful.
Last Thursday, February 6, three CBL interns - Paige Cohen '21, Caitlin Grant '21, and Yesenia Gutierrez '21 - led a thought-provoking dialogue session titled "Toxic Charity" in the Levis Browsing Room of Dinand. This discussion aimed to challenge students to think critically about the consequences of their charitable actions and to consider the long-term impact they could have on the communities they aim to serve.
One such student, Molly Coghan '27, shared her positive experience with CBL. She enjoys her CBL day and has already formed a close bond with the student she works with. Coghan finds the CBL programme to be an invaluable part of her Holy Cross experience.
CBL courses are not limited to service work alone. Students teaching Greco-Roman myths, for instance, may delve into the Latin language and ancient history, making the material taught in CBL courses often directly connected to the students' own courses.
In addition to CBL, the Social Justice Coalition was formed as a result of discussions following the 2015 Jesuit University Humanitarian Action Network (JUHAN) Conference. This student-led group was created to apply the lessons learned at the conference to life on campus. The Social Justice Coalition focuses on social justice issues and, during its formation process, broke up into smaller groups to tackle specific concerns more effectively.
As the academic year progresses, Holy Cross students continue to engage in these meaningful learning experiences, combining academic rigour with community service and social justice discussions, making their time at the College both enriching and transformative.
