Lehigh University Recognized as Premier Research University by Carnegie Classification
Lehigh University, nestled in Pennsylvania, has made a significant leap in the world of academia, earning the prestigious R1 research university designation by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. This recognition places Lehigh University among the top 187 institutions nationwide, standing out as a beacon for research and innovation.
The R1 designation signifies a university's commitment to research, with a focus on very high research activity. To qualify, an institution must invest a minimum of $50 million annually on research and development and produce at least 70 research doctorates each year. Lehigh University, in 2023, awarded 94 doctorates and spent $56.3 million on research, surpassing these benchmarks.
