Lehigh University's class of '75 reminisces over introducing gender equality in education
Lehigh University Alumna Makes History as First Female Commander in the U.S. Military
In a groundbreaking moment for Lehigh University and the United States military, Ann (Schmoyer) Story '75 became the first female commissioned into the military from the prestigious institution. Story, who was also the first female commander of the Air Force ROTC's Arnold Air Society, made history as she joined the ranks of the military.
Story's journey at Lehigh began in 1971, when the university admitted its first class of undergraduate female students. As a member of the Class of 1975, consisting of 169 women, Story found her place at the university within a week of arriving. Her involvement in various athletic teams, such as the women's varsity field hockey and lacrosse, intramural softball, and powder-puff football, provided a sense of community.
Story's leadership skills were evident early on, as she served as one of the first co-captains of the women's tennis and volleyball teams at Lehigh. Her role as commander in the ROTC program further boosted her confidence and made her feel accepted.
The Class of 1975, which marked a significant transition for the university, also found community through athletics, particularly through the women's powder-puff football games. Story, along with Karen Stuckey '75, participated in the inaugural powder-puff football game. Stuckey, who served as class treasurer during her time at Lehigh, later became the first female president of the Lehigh Alumni Association.
Fifty years after graduating, the Class of 1975 recently celebrated their Reunion Weekend held from June 12-15, 2021. Nine members of the Class of 1975, including Story, processed into Lehigh's 2025 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony. During the ceremony, Story had the honour of ringing the bell to welcome the newest Lehigh alumni.
The internet has made it easier for Lehigh alumni to connect and stay in touch between Reunions. This digital connection has allowed alumni like Story to continue to make a positive impact on the university and its community.
As we reflect on the accomplishments of the Class of 1975, it is clear that their legacy continues to shape Lehigh University. Story's trailblazing journey serves as a testament to the university's commitment to diversity and inclusion, and her contributions will be remembered for years to come.
