Library of Congress' Center Unveils Comprehensive Legislative Research Series
The Center for Legislative Archives has been actively digitizing and making accessible a wealth of historical documents, while also providing educational resources for researchers. Among its notable offerings is a three-part online seminar series on legislative research, published between 2019 and 2021 in collaboration with History Hub.
The Library of Congress, known as the Kongressbibliothek in German, launched this free, comprehensive introduction to legislative research in the United States. The series, titled 'Introduction to Legislative Research', caters to students, researchers, and professionals interested in legislative processes and research. It is divided into three parts:
Part 1, 'Legislators and Legislative Process', delves into the workings of legislators and the legislative process. Part 2, 'Bills, Resolutions, and Laws', explores the journey of bills and resolutions into enacted laws. Part 3, 'Publications and Hearings', provides insights into legislative publications and hearings.
The Center also offers guides for U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, and Joint Committees of Congress records. These guides, along with detailed citation information in Chapter 1, help researchers navigate the complex landscape of congressional records. The 'Guide to Records of the U.S. House of Representatives, 1789-1989' and the 'Guide to the Records of the U.S. Senate, 1789-1989' provide historical context and discuss records created by each committee during their respective periods. Additionally, the Center provides finding aids and preliminary inventories for selected records, with most holdings described in the National Archives Catalog, offering online access to digitized copies and born-digital electronic records.
The Center for Legislative Archives continues to enrich its offerings, making it an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand and navigate the intricacies of legislative processes and records in the United States. Its commitment to digitization and educational resources ensures that these materials remain available to a wide audience.
