Thriving Coffee Industry in Thailand: Homegrown Brands Steadily Challenging Established Leaders

In the face of global challenges, the domestic coffee market in Thailand is experiencing a remarkable surge, propelled by the success of local brands. Both established players and emerging chains have recorded significant financial gains due to a competitive pricing model that caters to the country's insatiable coffee consumption.

The affordable price model, focusing on competitively priced beverages, has emerged as a key driver for this impressive expansion. According to recent financial disclosures for 2024, numerous coffee chains have reported an increase in revenue, net profit, and store count.

One notable newcomer, Café Phunthai, has shown remarkable growth, outperforming several long-standing brands and setting ambitious goals to become the largest coffee chain in the country by branch network. Despite this growing competition, Café Amazon, Thailand's largest coffee chain, continues to maintain a stronghold in the market.

PTT's lifestyle business segment, primarily spearheaded by Café Amazon, has experienced exponential growth. The strategic restructuring within Café Amazon, led by former CEO Disathat Panyarachun, has streamlined the brand's operations, enabling it to better compete for market share both domestically and internationally.

Café Amazon is increasingly vital to PTT's corporate strategy, particularly as its parent company navigates the complexities of global oil price fluctuations. In 2024, Café Amazon sold 400 million cups, with an average of 1.1 million daily. It operates over 4,900 outlets worldwide, including 4,485 in Thailand and a strong presence in Cambodia.

Café Phunthai, a part of PTG Energy, reported a remarkable 116% revenue increase in 2024 to 3 billion baht, with a net profit of 291 million baht. After turning profitable in 2022, the chain aims to open 146 new branches in Q1 2025, maintaining its goal of 5,000 outlets by 2028.
