Luenen Leads Sustainable School Mobility in 'EMW Makes School' Project

Luenen, a municipality in North Rhine-Westphalia, is leading the way in promoting sustainable school mobility management. As one of three pilot cities for the 'EMW makes school' project, Luenen is set to participate in the European Mobility Week (EMW) from September 16 to 22, 2025. The project, backed by NRW School Minister Dorothee Feller and NRW Transport Minister Oliver Krischer, aims to strengthen school mobility management and use EMW as a catalyst for mobility topics.

Luenen's involvement in the project is twofold. Firstly, the municipality is launching the 'Early practice' action at all primary schools. This initiative encourages climate-friendly commuting, promoting safe and independent school routes. Mayor Jürgen Kleine-Frauns hopes Luenen's example will inspire other municipalities to follow suit.

Secondly, Luenen is establishing a 'temporary school street' traffic trial at the Elisabeth School. This action, supported by the creative agency and mobility future network 'Morgenstadt 2025', makes school routes more enjoyable and creative using the 'Playway' action box. Minister Feller underscores the importance of safe and independent mobility for children and young people.

Luenen's participation in the 'EMW makes school' project is a significant step towards improving school mobility management. By encouraging climate-friendly commuting and creating safer, more enjoyable school routes, Luenen is setting a precedent for other municipalities. The project, driven by the Mobility Future Network NRW, brings together educational and transport policy goals, ensuring a sustainable future for school mobility.
