Getting Familiar with the Dragon Prince: Khankhuulu mongoliensis

The infamous Tyrannosaurus rex isn't the only dinosaur that'll capture your imagination anymore. A new species has been unearthed, revealing fresh insights into the T. rex's origins.

Jared Voris and Darla Zelenitsky, a team of researchers from the University of Calgary, Canada, have unveiled this new species after studying two dinosaur remains discovered in Mongolia in the 70s. The new species, named Khankhuulu mongoliensis, is a direct ancestor of the fearsome T. rex. This revelation comes from an extensive study published in the journal "Nature".

This dragon prince, as its name suggests, is derived from the Mongolian words for "prince" and "dragon", while the species name "mongoliensis" refers to its place of discovery.

The Scarcity of Information

Previously, not much was known about this group of dinosaurs due to the scarcity of fossil materials, as the team points out: "Until now, very little was known about the smaller tyrannosaurs from the middle Cretaceous due to limited fossil records."

Ancestry Revealed

Despite their differences in appearance, the "dragon prince" likely weighted around 500 kg. In contrast, an adult T. rex can weigh between 1000 to 3500 kg. Additionally, Khankhuulu mongoliensis had a slender, longer-legged body, and a more delicate, distinct skull, unlike the massive, deeply-structured skulls of tyrannosaurs.

Shared Traits

However, they share similar details. Comparing around 370 features of the dinosaur skeletons, the research team found similarities between Khankhuulu mongoliensis and juvenile T. rex skeletons, supporting the idea that the dragon prince played an essential role in the evolution of other species.

Contributions to the Evolutionary History

The study's authors state that Asian tyrannosaurs migrated to North America and spawned eutyrannosaurs during the middle to late Cretaceous period. Eutyrannosaurs, which include the T. rex, emerged and spread across North America within a relatively short period, potentially playing a crucial role in the development of larger, more robust species.

The revelation of this ancestral relationship between the Khankhuuluu mongoliensis and Tyrannosaurus rex offers examples of how species evolve over time. Over millions of years, Saurischians developed diverse features, such as large, heavy bodies, or slender, narrow bodies, enabling these organisms to adapt and occupy various ecological niches.

In essence, the growth patterns of these dinosaurs shifted from robust to less robust, resulting in the evolution of more graceful species that specialized in smaller prey, while heavier species dominated the top of the food chain. This evolutionary change played a crucial role in the coexistence and adaption of dinosaurs during the late Cretaceous period.
