Maricopa Community Colleges Revamps University Transfer Partnerships
Maricopa Community Colleges, serving around 100,000 students annually, has revamped its university transfer partnership model to better support today's learners. The district aims to create meaningful and impactful pathways for students, with 38% enrolling with the goal of transferring to a university.
Previously, Maricopa faced challenges with university partners not meeting expectations. To address this, the district has established clear criteria and an evaluation process for partnerships. The new model prioritises institutional relevance, resource capacity, and student need.
The revamped model, introduced in 2022, requires university partners to accept credits earned through prior learning assessment, provide annual data, and meet other specified criteria. Maricopa is already seeing promising results, with partners demonstrating strong commitment and expanding transfer pathways.
The district maintains formal articulation agreements with over 35 colleges and universities, including the Arizona Transfer System. It is now considering additional criteria, such as reserving course seats for Maricopa transfer students and offering internships and work opportunities.
Maricopa is assessing the impact of its revamped partnership model to ensure its success. The district is committed to supporting students' transfer goals, with 38% of students indicating this as their primary reason for enrollment. By fostering strong, strategic partnerships, Maricopa aims to provide students with the best possible pathway to university.
