Microsoft Integrates Top-tier OneNote Drawing Tools into Word, Excel, and PowerPoint - Understanding the Significance

Microsoft has expanded the capabilities of its Office applications by integrating the Fountain Pen and Brush Pen features originally introduced in OneNote. These tools, now available in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on Windows, offer a more natural and expressive inking experience.

To use these pens in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, you need to have Version 2508 (Build 19127.20000) or later installed on Windows. They can be found on the Draw tab, allowing users to annotate or create more artistic ink strokes in those apps, similar to their use in OneNote.

As of now, this enhanced pen functionality is limited to Windows versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. There is currently no official release of the Fountain or Brush pen tools for Microsoft 365 apps on iPadOS or Android. Microsoft’s documentation and announcements suggest that macOS lacks pen support in Office apps, and while the feature may eventually come to iPadOS or Android, no confirmed rollout or timeline is available.

How to Use the New Pens

To add the Fountain Pen and Brush Pen to the Draw tab, select "Add" in the Draw tab. To use these pens, simply click and draw on the canvas. The Fountain Pen replicates its real-world equivalent by allowing detailed lettering with thin lines, while the Brush Pen's line thickness depends on the angle of the stylus.

Managing Your Drawing Tools

You can reorder the drawing tools by clicking and dragging them left or right. To delete a drawing tool, press and hold or right-click, then select "Delete". Alternatively, you can expand the options for a specific tool and select "Delete Tool". Multiple copies of specific tools can be added, such as two highlighters set to different colors.

Subscription Offer

Microsoft 365 Personal, which grants access to a large library of applications across several devices for 12 months, is currently available at a discounted price of $69.99, down from $99.99. This subscription is perfect for anyone who wants the best experience for Microsoft 365 or its Office applications, but it is not recommended if you need Microsoft 365 for more than one person.

In summary:

| Feature | Windows (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) | iPadOS | Android | |---------------------------------|----------------------------------|--------|---------| | Fountain Pen and Brush Pen tools | Available (Version 2508+) | No | No |

Thus, for now, these pens work fully on Windows but are not yet available on iPad or Android platforms in Microsoft 365 Office apps.
