Music expert Professor Travis J. Cross, known for his conducting, composing, and arranging, assumes the position as chair of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Department of Music on July 1, 2018. Previously affiliated with the institution, Cross steps into this role starting next month.

Music Department Welcomes New Chair: Travis J. Cross Assumes Leadership Role

UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Welcomes New Chair, Professor Travis J. Cross

After a successful five-year tenure as assistant professor of music and wind ensemble conductor at Virginia Tech, Professor Travis J. Cross is set to take on a new role at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. On July 1, 2018, he will become the chair of the Department of Music, succeeding Professor Neal Stulberg who led the department for four years.

Professor Cross brings a wealth of experience and accomplishments to his new position. He holds degrees from St. Olaf College and Northwestern University in music education and conducting, and his original compositions and arrangements are published by Boosey & Hawkes, Daehn Publications, and Theodore Music.

His influence extends beyond the academic sphere, as he has appeared as a guest conductor, composer, and clinician in more than 30 states and several international locations. His works have been performed in prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall.

At UCLA, Professor Cross has been a vice chair of the music department since 2014. He has also served as associate dean for academic mentoring and opportunity during the inaugural years of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. One of his notable achievements at UCLA was establishing the UCLA Wind Conducting Workshop and reviving the UCLA Wind Ensemble Invitational.

Prior to his position at UCLA, Professor Cross taught for four years at Edina (Minn.) High School. He is also a Yamaha Master Educator, a testament to his expertise in music education.

Judith Smith, dean of the Herb Alpert School of Music, praised Professor Cross's achievements in conducting, composing, arranging, teaching, and music education. She expressed her confidence in his ability to lead the department, stating, "Professor Cross's passion for music and his dedication to nurturing the next generation of musicians make him an ideal choice to lead our department."

Professor Cross will conduct the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band and direct the graduate wind conducting program at UCLA. His leadership is expected to continue the reinvigoration of the UCLA Wind Ensemble, which he has been spearheading over the past five years.

As Professor Cross steps into his new role, the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music looks forward to the new opportunities and achievements his leadership will bring.
