NBC News Restructures for 'Story-Centric' Approach, Launches New Subscription Service
Comcast is restructuring its NBC News division as it spins off its cable properties into a new company, Versant. The changes aim to strengthen editorial oversight and bolster a 'story-centric' approach across all platforms. Notably, Janelle Rodriguez, who oversees 'NBC Nightly News' and NBC News Now, will now report to Rebecca Blumenstein.
Under the new structure, NBC News and MSNBC will operate separately, with Cesar Conde bringing two units under a single person's oversight at NBCUniversal. This change comes after Noah Oppenheim led both units since 2023 under the new NBCUniversal structure. Meanwhile, Libby Leist, who oversees NBC News' 'Today' franchise, will continue reporting to Cesar Conde.
To reinforce its reputation for fact-based reporting, NBC News is launching a new marketing campaign. The division will also operate with two business divisions rather than three. Furthermore, NBC News is expanding its sports news coverage, potentially including Sunday-night MLB games on NBC. In addition, a new subscription service targeting mobile customers is set to launch.
These changes, including Janelle Rodriguez reporting to Rebecca Blumenstein, signal a new era for NBC News. The division aims to strengthen its editorial oversight and storytelling, while also expanding its offerings, including a new subscription service and potentially Sunday-night MLB games.
