New Academic Service Center Debuts at Hellgate

Hellgate High School has taken a significant step towards enhancing academic support for its students with the introduction of the Academic Service Center (ASC). Located on the second floor of the old-old library, down the hall from student services, the ASC is designed to be easily accessible for students who need assistance.

The ASC, which is in its initial year, marks a new beginning for Hellgate High School. The centre is spearheaded by three dedicated teachers: Ms. Peterson, Mr. Lopez, and Mrs. Nguyen. The team is further bolstered by the addition of Simon Hill and Astrea Steen, who have been hired as the content interventionists for the ASC.

The Credit Recovery Lab, a key component of the ASC, is designed to help students earn credits they may have missed in other classrooms, thereby aiding them in staying on track for graduation. The ASC aims to address academic issues before they become irreversible, setting it apart from other academic student assistance programs at Hellgate High School.

The ASC operates on an individualized basis, working with students to address their unique academic struggles. This approach allows teachers to adapt their assistance and structures to meet each student's needs, a necessary adaptation given the changes education has undergone over the last five to ten years and the significant impact COVID-19 has had on the learning process for students.

Astrea Hanford, a key figure in the establishment of the ASC, emphasized the centre's mission to help students who may be suffering in silence. Hanford assured students that it's not their fault and that help is available. She also highlighted the ASC's proactive approach, stating that it's designed to identify and address academic issues before they escalate.

Students can drop by the ASC at any point during the day and work with one of the two content interventionists. Simon Hill covers science and math concepts, while Astrea Steen handles English and history. The ASC functions as an open-door environment for students to receive personalized academic support.

The immediate goal of the ASC, as mentioned by all involved parties, is to reduce dropout rates, increase school engagement, and improve attendance. The long-term goal for the ASC, as stated by Simon Hill, is an experiential-learning-based cocurriculum. This approach aims to make education less menial and more meaningful.

The success of the ASC will be measured by data related to these goals. By providing a supportive, individualized learning environment, the ASC hopes to make a positive impact on the lives of Hellgate High School students.
