Singtel's data centre subsidiary, Nxera, has announced a significant recruitment and training initiative aimed at hiring and training over 500 people in Singapore for data centre and AI-related roles. This initiative supports Singapore's ambitions to expand its data centre capacity by over one-third in the next few years, addressing the talent shortage in this sector.

Broadening the Talent Pool

Nxera's recruitment drive targets fresh graduates and mid-career professionals from both technical and non-technical backgrounds. A tech background is not mandatory, making the initiative more accessible to a wider range of candidates.

Diverse Roles and Skill Focus

Approximately half of the positions will be engineering-related, while the rest cover non-technical areas such as product management, financial management, consultancy, design, and engineering. Nxera is specifically emphasizing AI skills training within these hiring efforts to support Singapore’s AI ambitions.

Comprehensive Training and Partnerships

The initiative includes internships, graduate programmes, work-study arrangements, and full-time roles to attract and develop sustainability and digital talent. Nxera is collaborating with data centre design and consultancy firms, automation specialists, and equipment suppliers to deliver comprehensive training and recruitment across the ecosystem.

Addressing the Talent Gap

Nxera has created a Sustainable AI Data Centre Academy in collaboration with various institutes of higher learning to address the talent gap, particularly in new areas such as sustainability and high-density AI environments. The academy offers competency-based, stackable micro-credentials that align with the latest technologies and practices.

Supporting Singapore's AI Ambitions

The recruitment and training initiatives are in support of Singapore's artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions. Nxera has committed to upskilling all its employees in AI operations and sustainability through co-curated data centre courses with SIT, Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, and ITE.

Looking Ahead

Nxera's 58MW sustainable AI-ready data centre, DC Tuas, in Singapore is set to begin operations in early 2026. The company is also accelerating its expansion plans with the development of several AI data centres in the Asia region.

The Sustainable AI Data Centre Career Day, an official event under the SkillsFuture Festival, brought together over 1,000 students, job seekers, and mid-career professionals, along with government agencies, institutes of higher learning, and industry leaders. The event was graced by Tan Kiat How, the senior Minister of State, Ministry of Digital Development and Information.

This initiative is part of a broader strategic push to build Singapore's digital infrastructure workforce, particularly in data centres and AI, thereby bolstering the country’s position as a regional hub for advanced digital technologies.
