Oak Grove School District Wins Tech & Learning Award for Student Data Privacy Leadership
The edtech specialists at Oak Grove School District in California have emerged as regional leaders in student data privacy. Their collaborative efforts, led by Najeeb Qasimi, Sergio Rizzi, Bruce Neff, and Steve Harmon, have earned them Tech & Learning's Innovative Leader award for Best Implementation of Student Data Privacy.
The team's success stems from their 'Ask before you app' campaign, which encourages educators to verify approved student loans before use. Bruce Neff, a key advisor, stresses the importance of understanding 'why' student data privacy practices matter. He warns about free edtech tools, stating, 'If a product is free, the product is you.'
To ensure safe edtech use, the team collaborated with district leadership, the teachers' union, and the business department. They also advise districts to work with state stakeholders and national organizations like the Student Data Privacy Consortium. Several prominent U.S. school districts, including Los Angeles Unified School District, Dallas Independent School District, and Chicago Public Schools, have cooperated with this consortium to establish joint student data privacy agreements. Sergio Rizzi uses a physical analogy to illustrate the risks of technology use on student privacy, while Steve Harmon emphasizes the need to ensure safe use of edtech tools without discouraging their application.
The Oak Grove Union edtech team's innovative approach to student data privacy has set a regional standard. Their award-winning campaign, 'Ask before you app', along with their collaborative efforts and advice to work with relevant stakeholders, ensures a safer digital learning environment for students.
