Portugal Extends Residence Permits for Language Test Failures
Applicants seeking temporary residence in Portugal who fail the mandatory Portuguese language test, known as CIPLE, will now have their permits extended until they pass. This change aims to accommodate those who narrowly miss the passing mark.
The CIPLE test, organized by the Centro Italiano di Promozione della Lingua e della Cultura Estrinseca (CIPLE), assesses applicants' Portuguese language skills at the A2 level. It consists of Reading & Writing, Listening, and Speaking sections, lasting two hours in total. The test costs €72, payable via MULTIBANCO or bank transfer, at least 24 hours before the exam.
Exemptions from the test apply to those married to a Portuguese citizen, naturalized Portuguese, originating from a Portuguese-speaking country, holding higher-level Portuguese certificates, aged over 60, or facing mental handicaps, illiteracy, serious illness, or learning difficulties. Children under 10 take an adapted version, and those in Portuguese schools may be exempt. The Portuguese Golden Visa program does not require this test.
Applicants for permanent residency or citizenship must pass the CIPLE exam with a grade of 55% or higher. Scores between 55-69% are considered sufficient, 70-84% good, and 85-100% very good. Those who fail initially will now have their temporary residence permits extended until they successfully complete the test.
