Reflection: The Potential for Revival of Past Ideas
A New Perspective: Embracing Sustainability and Immersive Technology
In the ever-evolving world of technology, one author has recently found themselves captivated by a unique piece of equipment – a curved monitor, the V3456C, generously loaned by ViewSonic. This shift in office setup has not only brought about a new immersive viewing experience but also sparked a conversation on sustainability and repurposing old gear.
Before diving into the captivating world of curved monitors, the author, who once wore a college ring from Florida Atlantic University, made a decision to put the ring aside and store it away. However, a recent encounter with the ring and an upcoming guest lecture at FAU led to a renovation process, involving a local jeweler, to clean up, resize, and remove the Social Security Number engraved inside the ring. The ring now finds itself rotating on the author's right-ring finger, a testament to its newfound significance.
The curved monitor, with its square base instead of long feet, required some adjustments, particularly with the webcam placement. The author found that the monitor takes up more real estate on the desk compared to the previous one. Yet, the immersive feel it provides when watching full-screen videos makes up for the extra space.
However, the author has not found a way to convert their standard widescreen monitor into a curved form factor. If the decision is made to upgrade, the old monitor may have to be discarded. But, in line with the Pro AV industry's emphasis on sustainability, the author suggests repurposing old gear for secondary tasks when possible, and disposing of it responsibly when it's truly end-of-life.
Recycling, donating or selling equipment, and using professional e-waste disposal services are all responsible methods of disposing of outdated AV equipment. These practices not only reduce electronic waste but also support circular economy principles, aligning with common approaches within technology sectors and educational deployments detailed by companies like ViewSonic.
The author's office setup is undergoing a transformation due to the curved monitor, leading to a rethinking of the entire layout. The journey into the world of curved monitors has not only provided an immersive viewing experience but also served as a reminder of the importance of sustainability in the tech industry.

- Incorporating sustainability strategies, the author plans to repurpose their old standard widescreen monitor, which might be discarded during the office upgrade, for home-and-garden products like a digital picture frame or education-and-self-development resources like an e-book reader.
- As the author continues to immerse themselves in the world of curved monitors, they envision a lifestyle where sustainable technology products, such as energy-efficient monitors and devices with recyclable materials, become the primary focus, creating a harmonious blend of technology and sustainability in their home-and-garden setting.
