The University of Bremen (HSB) is set to participate in the Research Mile, a key event during the Maritime Week, taking place at Bremen's Weserpromenade from September 13 to 21, 2025.

The Research Mile, running from September 18 to 22, is a segment of the broader Maritime Week that focuses on research and science related to maritime topics. This year's event promises a vibrant agenda, blending science, culture, and maritime flair at the Weser waterfront.

HSB's involvement in the Research Mile includes exhibitions, interactive programs, and interesting lectures providing insights into maritime science, shipping, maritime technology, and the importance of water to Bremen.

Visitors are encouraged to visit HSB's pavilion at the Schlachte during the Research Mile, open from 10 am to 6 pm on September 21st and 22nd. Highlights of the HSB's presentations include a hydrogen-powered bicycle cargo trailer and an innovative rowing boat showcasing the activities of the "Shipbuilding and Maritime Technology" study program.

The hydrogen-powered bicycle cargo trailer is a converted version of an existing bicycle cargo trailer. It operates through a reverse reaction of a fuel cell, with an electrolyzer onboard splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen produced serves as fuel for the trailer, powering its motor.

Meanwhile, an HSB team will present the "Environmental Technology" study program by exhibiting a hydrogen-powered bicycle cargo trailer during the Research Mile. Additionally, visitors will have the opportunity to experience a VR experience from the composites lab.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Klefoth, from HSB, will use the black goby, an invasive fish species originally from the Black, Caspian, and Azov seas, as an example to raise awareness about invasive species during the Research Mile. Posters will be used to explain the displayed species, including the black goby.

Students and lecturers of the International Study Program "Technical and Applied Biology" (ISTAB) will also exhibit the underwater world of the Weser in aquariums during the Research Mile.

The festive weekend (September 19–21) of the Maritime Week will feature culinary delights, music, activities, a light boat cruise, and dragon boat races at the Schlachte, highlighting Bremen’s maritime culture.
