Dortmund to Open Jewish Primary School Annex in 2023
The city of Dortmund is set to welcome a new educational institution with the opening of a Jewish primary school annex at the Berswordt-Europa Primary School in 2023.
The project, which was planned and approved before 2021, has been in the works since initial announcements and preparations took place in 2020 and early 2021. Construction began in late 2021 to early 2022.
The Jewish Cultural Community has provided interim rooms for the 2025/26 school year, with the school start officially set for this period. The school will initially operate with one track, consisting of one class per grade level from grades 1 to 4. There is expansion potential, with four additional classes possible in the future.
The Jewish annex will be built in the former main school at Ostpark on Davidisstraße, adjacent to the main campus of the Berswordt-Europa Primary School. The building, which previously served as the main school, allows for expansion due to the need for more space, especially in the school cafeteria and dining hall due to Jewish dietary requirements.
A small gym will be built next to the main building, and the social and changing rooms for the small gym will be accommodated in the main school building. The small sports hall will be connected via a central hallway with an elevator, ensuring all floors and rooms are accessible.
The construction of the Jewish annex is a significant milestone for the future, as the Jewish community in Dortmund has grown to over 3,000 members. Rabbi, in a statement, said, "There is a Jewish future here. And a Jewish school would be a strong sign for Dortmund."
The city council of Dortmund is paving the way for a Jewish school location, investing over 13 million euros in the renovation and construction of the school location. The additional costs will be covered by state funds.
The teaching staff will teach in both buildings of the Berswordt-Europa Primary School and the Jewish annex. Hebrew, Jewish religion, traditions, and customs of Jewish culture will be taught at the Jewish annex, along with Kosher cuisine. The Jewish primary school requires additional space in the entrance area due to security measures.
Moving into the building is planned for 2032. The expansion possibility has been agreed with the regional government, and the school has the potential to grow and serve the needs of the Jewish community for years to come. The timeline for the Jewish primary school at the main school in the Ostpark in Dortmund is set, marking an exciting future for Jewish education in the city.
The Jewish primary school annex, set to open in 2023, signifies a significant step towards enhancing education-and-self-development opportunities in Dortmund. Despite plans being made before 2021, sports facilities are also being incorporated into the project, with a small gym and sports hall planned for the annex, fostering a well-rounded learning environment that includes sports.
