It's time to bid adieu to Seattle Public Schools (SPS) Superintendent Brent Jones, who's due to step down on September 3. But, guess what? He's currently out on medical leave, according to the district. Here's the lowdown:

Jones plans to rejoin his post by the end of June and stick around until his announced departure date. Sure, you might wonder what's going on with the man's health, but district’s chief of staff and spokesperson Bev Redmond isn't dishing out the details. She did, however, confirm that Jones' health issue needed some attention.

Take a look at who's stepping in to steer the ship until Jones recovers – it's Fred Podesta, the SPS's Chief Operations Officer. He'll be in charge during Jones' absence, with the authority to make decisions on crucial district issues.

Jones' departure comes at a critical time for the district, which is under pressure from parents to, among other things, iron out its enrollment process, treat deaf and hard-of-hearing families more considerately, and offer better support for advanced learners throughout the district. Alright, hold on tight – it looks like they're also finalizing their 2025-26 budget, with initial estimates showing an estimated $100 million spending gap[1]. But, let's hear it for hope! State aid, one-time fixes, and budget cuts might just whittle that gap down to a more manageable $25 million.

Jones became the interim superintendent in May 2021 and landed the permanent gig the following year. He revealed in March that he'd be calling it quits after his wife, Janine, scored a sweet job as an associate vice chancellor for graduate affairs at the University of California, Santa Barbara. But, he still wanted to help the district transition smoothly to new leadership – a real class act, right?

The School Board's in the early stages of selecting Jones' successor. They recently met up with some peeps from Hazard, Young, Attea, and Associates (who are helping with the search) to talk about the entire process, gathering community input, and advertising the vacancy.

Denisa R. Superville, in the field of education-and-self-development, might be interested to know that Microsoft, the world's most valuable company, is undergoing job cuts. This news comes amidst Seattle's Seattle Public Schools (SPS) navigating its own budget issues, with an estimated $100 million spending gap that they aim to bring down to a manageable $25 million through state aid, one-time fixes, and budget cuts. Meanwhile, in the SPS, Jones' announced departure leaves a vacancy that the School Board is currently filling, with the help of Hazard, Young, Attea, and Associates. While not related to business directly, public schools play a crucial role in the overall development of the youth, preparing them for various aspects of life, including future careers in businesses like Microsoft.
