Submission Invitation: Music and Metaphor Conference

The UCLA PEER Lab and Durham University Music Department are set to host a virtual symposium focusing on the creative exploration of musical metaphors and the representation of marginalized perspectives in music. The event, titled "Music and Metaphors," is scheduled to take place on April 29-30, 2022.

This symposium aims to foster an inclusive environment for diverse voices, encouraging a shift in the power balance and addressing questions about recognition of experiences, relationships, and world creation. It invites scholars, writers, and musicians of all backgrounds to submit their individual contributions, which can be in the form of papers, workshop prompts, performances, or alternative formats. Each submission should not exceed 10 minutes.

The symposium investigates the role of musical metaphor as a resource for understanding, exploring how it shapes our perception and comprehension of music, sound, others, and the world. Panels or roundtables can involve three or more individuals and last for 30 minutes.

Submissions for the symposium are open until February 22, 2022, and decisions will be announced no later than March 8, 2022. Registration information will be available soon.

For those interested in learning more about the symposium, it is recommended to check the official websites of UCLA PEER Lab and Durham University Music Department for past event announcements or archives. Alternatively, one can reach out directly to the organizers or departments involved to inquire about possible archived materials or past event details. Additionally, academic databases or repositories may hold papers or abstracts related to the symposium.

This unique symposium promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking exploration of music and metaphors, providing a platform for diverse voices to share their perspectives and challenge conventional norms in the music industry.

Education and self-development can be fostered through participation in the "Music and Metaphors" symposium, where scholars, writers, and musicians of all backgrounds are invited to submit individual contributions that delve into the creative exploration of musical metaphors and the representation of marginalized perspectives in music. This event, offering entertainment in the form of panels, roundtables, performances, and papers, serves as an opportunity for alternative modes of expression and critiques of the music industry.
