Swiss Guardsmen Dedicate Themselves to Pope Leo XIV Despite Demands and Discomfort
Pope Leo XIV's election in May 2025 ushered in a new era at the Vatican, with Swiss Guardsmen, including those from Engelberg, continuing their dedicated service. Despite the demands and discomfort of their role, these guards find purpose and growth in their duty.
The Swiss Guardsman's day can stretch from six to twelve hours, depending on Pope Leo XIV's schedule. Despite the length of service, faith remains the cornerstone for these guards, who hail from places like Engelberg. They find their service personally enriching, even amidst stress and the discomfort of their woollen uniforms in both summer and winter.
The uniform and the Vatican's environment help instil discipline among the guards. However, they must also make personal sacrifices, such as forgoing vacations and cell phone use during duty. This year, during the Holy Year 2025, Pope Leo XIV's agenda is particularly full, requiring more of their presence. Despite the challenges, they consider it an honour and responsibility to serve, with no opportunity yet for a casual conversation with Pope Leo XIV, who is seen as a 'dignified middle of the road' figure.
The Swiss Guardsmen, with their faith as their foundation, continue to serve Pope Leo XIV diligently, even amidst the demands and discomfort of their role. Their service, lasting up to 26 months, is a testament to their commitment and personal growth.
