Tales for Children with Special Needs: Unraveling the Beast within them.
Hey there! Time for a good ol' yarn, just in time for the Easter Holiday vibes. Before I dive into the story, let me give you a brief lowdown about me and my kid. We're a mum-son duo, and my boy is a 10-year-old whiz with a mischievous spark and a heart full of humor. He's got some special needs, and our lives run smoothly when we stick to routines and structure. But sometimes, life throws us a curveball, making things a tad difficult to manage. That's precisely where we've found ourselves now, tackling the trials and tribulations head-on.
When the going gets tough, and frustration seeps in, even a tiny issue can feel like a mountainous problem. "I can't stand it when things break!" When I hear something like this, I know it's time to roll up my sleeves. Nothing's actually broken here, so there's nothing explicit to fix. What I'm really dealing with is a kid who's feeling down and doesn't know why or how to snap out of it. So, how do you help someone feel better when they're feeling blue? Well, as it turns out, a classic children's story can actually provide some much-needed comfort.
Enter "The Breaking Monster," a tale about a monster who loves to wreak havoc by breaking things. My son's a Spanish speaker, but this destructive dude was born in English, all thanks to my boy's request. In our new life, English was the predominant language around us, and it was essential for us to embrace it. Even with his limited English skills, the entertaining scene where we defeat the monster— "Oh no, it was a trick, let me out, let me out"—always had him chuckling with glee.
Catch That Breaking Monster!
Transcript:
Stuck in their imaginary world, the Ugly-Thought Monsters are always on the prowl, trying to sneak into our reality. Emma and Victor are the sole crusaders standing between us and these nasty creatures. Their mission is extremely challenging, and, to make matters more mysterious, it's a secret too.
In a relaxed moment at home, Emma and Victor are playing a board game. Emma's sixth sense kicks in, warning her of some strange vibes afoot. They head to the kitchen and are met with chaos where all the dishes have been smashed to smithereens.
Victor, unsurprisingly, exclaims: "This is just what I feared. I think the Breaking Monster has managed to escape from the Imaginary World."
Narrator: The Breaking Monster's a real menace. Anything he touches turns into rubble. He considers his havoc hilarious. If you hear him knocking on your door, keep it shut tight.
Victor opines: "We need to stop him before he wrecks our toys."
Emma comes up with a plan on the spot: "I reckon I've got an ingenious idea." Emma shouts out loud, ensuring the Breaking Monster hears her: "Mum's favorite sweater has the biggest hole I've ever seen." The crafty monster dashes towards the wardrobe to find it, and Emma and Victor quickly shut him in.
Monster: "Oh man, it was a trick! Let me out! Give me one more chance!"
Emma: "Sorry, Breaking Monster, but we cannot risk your causing more damage to our belongings."
Victor PIPES UP: "One less monster to worry about!"

In the midst of managing special needs and maintaining a structured lifestyle, a creative solution was needed to help the child feel better when feeling down. A story titled "Catch That Breaking Monster!" was introduced, which has a character destructive in nature, much like the child's feelings at times. This home-and-garden inspired story, featuring an antagonist bent on causing chaos, offers a lesson in self-development, teaching children about dealing with difficult emotions through problem solving and finding tricks to conquer challenges, just as our protagonists, Emma and Victor, do in the narrative.
