The Gymnasium in Bielefeld is permanently moving to a new location

The Beckerstraße satellite site of Bielefeld-Heepen High School is undergoing a comprehensive renovation and modernization, set to transform the premises into a state-of-the-art learning environment.

The project, which commences in April 20XX, will accommodate the entire upper school and boast science rooms on the latest level. The renovation is set to begin in March 2024 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The renovation plan focuses on significantly enhancing energy efficiency. Planned measures include upgrading the building’s insulation, installing new energy-efficient windows, modernizing the heating system with sustainable technologies, and integrating LED lighting. The goal is to reduce the building’s energy consumption substantially and support the school’s sustainability goals.

The estimated total cost for the renovation is around 7 million euros. This budget covers construction work, energy efficiency retrofits, new laboratory equipment, and safety upgrades.

The old science building on Beckerstraße is now equipped with an elevator, and a covered walkway will connect it to the old pavilion school from the 1960s. Enclosed bridge connections will ensure barrier-free access and a second escape route in the buildings.

A photovoltaic system with 160 modules will be installed on the large roof, capable of a peak output of around 76 kWp and saving approximately 45 tons of CO2 annually.

Once the science building on Beckerstraße is finished, the lower secondary school site at Alter Postweg will be renewed. The feasibility study serves as the basis for the distribution of grades and individual subject areas in the renovated building.

The Beckerstraße site offers a great location surrounded by plenty of greenery. The construction work will be carried out during ongoing operations and is expected to take until early 2027.

Headteacher Gabriele Kipp is satisfied with the prospects due to rising student numbers, changing pedagogical requirements, the introduction of full-day schooling, and the return to G9 from the 2026/27 school year. The renovation and rebuilding offer promising future prospects for Bielefeld-Heepen High School.

However, there have been setbacks in Europe-wide tenders related to the renovation project. Despite these challenges, the renovation project is moving forward, and the school community is eagerly anticipating the completion of the renovated science building.

For more detailed specifications or updates on the project status, contacting the Bielefeld education authority or the school administration would provide the latest official information.

The renovation project at the Beckerstraße site of Bielefeld-Heepen High School is not only focused on modernizing the premises but also prioritizes education-and-self-development, with the goal of creating an energy-efficient, state-of-the-art learning environment. This includes the installation of a photovoltaic system to support the school's sustainability goals and the provision of a covered walkway for barrier-free access, promoting equal opportunities for all students.
