Transformed Outlook for Schools: A Look at Expected Changes

Revised Article:

Starting September 1, 2025, the grading system for language assignments in Belarusian and Russian schools sees a shift towards more leniency. The revised regulations have been published on the National Legal Portal.

Fear no erasures, maintain neatness!

Youngsters can now secure a perfect score of '9' despite making a single, minor mistake. Previously, achieving a '9' demanded error-free work.

Slip-ups of considerable magnitude will still merit an '8'. Two errors will lead to a '7'.

Here's a breakdown of how vocabulary dictations will be evaluated:

  • 10 points - no errors
  • 9 points - one minor blunder
  • 8 points - one mistake
  • 7 points - two errors
  • 6 points - three errors
  • 5 points - four errors
  • 4 points - five errors
  • 3 points - six errors
  • 2 points - seven errors
  • 1 point - eight or more errors

Students in grades 5-11 will also be graded using similar principles.

Text dictations will adhere to the following norms:

  • 10 points - no errors
  • 9 points - no major errors or one minor orthographic (punctuation) error
  • 8 points - one error in spelling or one major orthographic error
  • 7 points - two spelling errors or two major orthographic errors
  • 6 points - three spelling errors or three major orthographic errors
  • 5 points - four spelling errors or four major orthographic errors
  • 4 points - five spelling errors or five major orthographic errors
  • 3 points - six or more spelling errors or six or more major orthographic errors
  • 2 points - a multitude of mistakes
  • 1 point - an abundance of errors

The Ministry's Take

The responsible ministry believes that this move aims to decrease stress among children who often lose points due to minor mistakes, as reported by lifenews.by. The objective also includes supporting learners who are still mastering the art of writing.

Teachers are encouraged to evaluate not only the number of errors but also their importance. For instance, minor errors include grammatical mishaps that violate dictation writing rules.

A mistake will be deemed significant if a word is incorrectly split or an orthographic rule is violated.

Regarding the volume of vocabulary dictations and other assignments (essays, compositions), the requirements remain unchanged.
