Ukraine's Top General Calls for NATO Rethink as War Tech Evolves
Ukraine's former Commander-in-Chief and current ambassador to the UK, Valeriy Zaluzhny, has called for a rethink of NATO's defence strategies in light of evolving battlefield realities. He believes the alliance's current approach may struggle to cope with modern conflicts dominated by 'ultra-cheap, ultra-effective technologies'.
Zaluzhny argues that NATO's strategic paradigm, shaped by the Second World War, is outdated and may face a crisis of relevance. He predicts the duration of the current war will depend on when a new technological equilibrium emerges, potentially taking up to five years.
To address these challenges, Zaluzhny advocates for integrating British technological capabilities into Ukraine's defence industrial base. This would deepen cooperation and enable real-time development and adaptation, given the short innovation cycle of modern defence technology. He supports the UK's 'Coalition of the Willing' initiative but notes that democracies move slowly, which is problematic in the face of urgent crises.
Zaluzhny questions NATO's ability to respond effectively to a large-scale crisis in its current form. He criticises NATO's approach to rearmament, describing it as treating new equipment as simple replacements rather than part of a broader transformation. He warns that the economic model of NATO warfare is unsustainable in a conflict where daily drone launches outpace interception capabilities.
Valeriy Zaluzhny urges Western governments to reassess defence strategies to keep pace with the rapidly evolving battlefield. He believes that integrating advanced technologies and adapting defence strategies are crucial for NATO's continued relevance and effectiveness in modern conflicts.
