Uncovering the Craftsmanship of Khadi via the Traditional Peti Charkha!

In a unique and innovative move, fashion design students at our institution are set to embark on a new learning journey in the production of Khadi-Denim. This transition will be supported through enhanced practical workshops, collaboration with Khadi artisans, the integration of sustainable textile technologies, and access to advanced design software and resources.

The initiative is spearheaded by Sachin Sachar, an exhibition designer and independent consultant, who has extended interests in material-driven design processes and collaborating with craft persons. Under his leadership, the primary objective of the Khadi sessions was to orient fashion design students to the world of Khadi with a hands-on experience.

The students began their journey by learning to work with a small spindle, followed by mastering the use of the Peti Charkha, an efficient, portable model devised by Mahatma Gandhi during his time in Yerwada Jail. After acing the art of spinning yarns, the students got their yarns dyed in Bhuj, Gujarat.

The Charkha, a symbol of Gandhi's ideals to empower the poor and oppressed, ensuring self-reliance and economic equality, is at the heart of this initiative. In a nod to Gandhi's vision, Prime Minister Modi has taken a pledge to create job opportunities through "Solar Charkhas". These charkhas, which operate by harnessing solar energy, have started operating in Khanwa Village of Nawada District in Bihar and are being implemented in other villages too.

Sachin Sachar's involvement extends beyond the Khadi sessions. He is known for his work in Exhibitions, Installations, Museums, and various other thematic design domains. His passion for material-driven design processes and collaboration with craft persons is evident in this innovative project.

As the students continue to learn and grow, they are not only gaining practical skills in Khadi-Denim production but also contributing to a sustainable and empowering movement that aligns with Gandhi's vision of self-reliance and economic equality.
